Do Morocco’s toll highways save time, and how do tolls work?

Yes, on long trips. Morocco’s toll highways are the easiest roads to drive between big cities, and you pay per section, in cash in dirhams, at the plaza. A standard car from Casablanca to Marrakech costs about 83 to 89 MAD, and from Casablanca to Rabat about 25 MAD, so keep small notes ready.

How do toll highways work in Morocco?

Morocco’s motorways are operated by Autoroutes du Maroc (ADM) and charged by section. You pass a barrier at the plaza, and on closed sections you take a ticket when you enter and hand it over when you leave. OneClickDrive warns that losing the ticket usually means paying the maximum fare for that stretch.

The Government of Canada says highways are easier to drive than other roads, but that the Rabat to Casablanca highway needs extra care because of heavy traffic. The same guide says national roads are generally in good condition but narrow and congested.

How much are tolls on Moroccan highways?

For a standard car (class 1), most single trips between big cities cost under 120 MAD. These figures come from two unofficial guides, so treat them as a guide to budget with.

Route Standard car Notes
Casablanca to Rabat 25 MAD TollGuru‘s table says 25 MAD, its text says 23 MAD
Casablanca to Marrakech 83 to 89 MAD Lower end when you enter near Nouaceur airport (OneClickDrive)
Kenitra to Tangier (Tanger Est) 78 MAD OneClickDrive
Kenitra to Tanger Med port 89 MAD TollGuru lists 87 MAD for Kenitra Nord to Tanger Med
Casablanca to Tangier, combined about 105 to 116 MAD TollGuru gives a range of 100 to 120 MAD

The two guides do not agree on every figure, and neither is ADM. OneClickDrive says rates rose in May 2025, so older price lists are likely out of date. ADM’s own site has a “Grille tarifaire sur le réseau” section, but the page we opened showed no amounts. Check the fare with ADM before you build a budget around it.

To budget a longer trip, add the sections. Marrakech to Tangier in one direction, taking the motorway the whole way, comes to roughly 188 to 205 MAD for a standard car: 83 to 89 MAD from Marrakech to Casablanca plus 105 to 116 MAD from Casablanca to Tangier. Double it for the return, and expect the total to move if ADM revises its grid.

Can I pay Morocco tolls by card, or do I need cash?

Cash in dirhams is the safe choice. Card acceptance is patchy, and Jawaz only helps if your rental car already has a tag.

Method Reliable for tourists? Detail
Cash in MAD Yes Both guides say every plaza takes dirhams. TollGuru says euros are not accepted.
Bank card Not always TollGuru says larger plazas on the main corridors take Visa and Mastercard. OneClickDrive says not to plan around it.
Jawaz tag Only if the car has one ADM’s prepaid tag gives access to dedicated lanes. TollGuru says it brings no discount against cash.

Older reporting was more optimistic. A 2015 Bladi article said card terminals were being installed at all toll stations. The 2026 guides describe coverage as uneven, so go by the newer ones and carry cash.

OneClickDrive adds that most rental cars do not come with a Jawaz tag, so ask at handover whether yours has one and how the balance is settled. Keep small notes and coins in the door pocket.

Is the toll highway faster and safer than national roads?

Usually faster, and easier to drive. The Government of Canada describes national roads as narrow and congested, and says drivers do not always follow traffic rules. Our Casablanca to Marrakech guide puts the motorway run at about 3 hours.

Two cautions apply on the motorway too. OneClickDrive lists the limits as 120 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on open roads and 60 km/h in towns, and says 552 new speed radars were added from June 2025. The Canadian guide also advises against driving at night, and the UK FCDO says poor lighting makes night driving dangerous. For a fuller risk picture, read is it safe to drive in Morocco.

What should I know about tolls in a rental car?

A few habits save time and arguments at the plaza:

  1. Keep the entry ticket safe on closed sections. Losing it usually means paying the maximum fare, according to OneClickDrive.
  2. Follow the lane signs. Jawaz-only lanes are marked, and without a tag you use the cash lanes.
  3. Keep receipts. OneClickDrive notes that some rental invoices itemize tolls.
  4. Avoid public holiday peaks. The same guide says plazas around Casablanca and Rabat queue at the start and end of public holidays.
  5. Carry your ID, license and rental papers within reach. The Government of Canada says checkpoints are frequent.
  6. Plan fuel separately. Our fuel prices guide covers pump costs for a road trip.

Ask the rental desk whether the car has a Jawaz tag, and how any tolls charged through it are billed to you.

FAQ: Morocco toll roads

Does Morocco have toll roads?

Yes. The main motorways between Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Tangier and the north are tolled, and ADM operates them. You pay per section at the plaza.

How much is the toll from Casablanca to Marrakech?

About 83 to 89 MAD for a standard car according to OneClickDrive, depending on where you enter and exit. Confirm with ADM, because our Casablanca to Marrakech guide and other reports show the amount can change.

Can I pay Morocco tolls with a credit card?

Sometimes. TollGuru says larger plazas on main corridors take Visa and Mastercard, while OneClickDrive says not to rely on it. Carry cash in dirhams.

Can I pay tolls in euros?

No, according to TollGuru. Only dirhams are accepted at ADM plazas.

Do I need a Jawaz tag?

No. TollGuru calls it not mandatory and says it brings no discount against cash. It gives access to faster lanes. OneClickDrive says most rental cars do not include one.

What if I lose my toll ticket?

OneClickDrive says you will usually pay the maximum fare for that stretch. Keep the ticket somewhere you can find it, such as the door pocket.

What is the speed limit on Moroccan highways?

OneClickDrive gives 120 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on open roads and 60 km/h in towns. Signs on the road take priority over any guide.
