Driving from Casablanca to Marrakech: route, tolls, time and stops

How long does it take to drive from Casablanca to Marrakech?

Plan on about 3 hours for roughly 225 km, almost all of it on the toll motorway that most maps label A3. One transfer company quotes about 2 hours 45 minutes in normal traffic and up to 3 hours 30 minutes on a Friday afternoon, so add a buffer if you have a flight or a dinner booking.

The road is a modern motorway that crosses farmland south of Casablanca, with the Atlas Mountains coming into view in the last 45 minutes or so. The hard parts are leaving Casablanca and the final stretch into Marrakech, not the motorway itself. Here is the short version.

Item What to expect
Distance About 220 to 227 km, depending on the source and the starting point
Road A3 motorway (some sites call it the A7)
Driving time About 2h45 in normal traffic, up to 3h30 on Friday afternoon
Toll, standard car 83 to 89 MAD one way from the Nouaceur toll station, per ADM’s published grid
Speed limit 120 km/h on Moroccan motorways
Payment Cash in dirhams, the Jawaz tag, and cards at some larger plazas
Service areas About every 30 to 50 km, from Berrechid to Sidi Bou Othmane

Which road do you take from Casablanca to Marrakech?

You take the paid motorway south. From Mohammed V airport it is a direct run: the motorway has an exit for the airport, and a toll station sits just south of it. If you start in central Casablanca, you join the ring road first and pick up the Marrakech motorway at its southern edge.

The Government of Canada notes that Morocco’s national roads are generally in good condition but narrow and congested, while highways are generally easier to drive on. For a first drive in the country, the motorway is the sensible choice.

The exits below are the ones travelers use most. Distances are approximate and measured from the Casablanca end, as listed by a road reference wiki.

Exit or landmark Approx. km from Casablanca Useful for
Settat North and Settat Center 52 to 65 Settat and the road to El Borouj
Ben Guerir 160 Youssoufia and El Kelaa des Sraghna
Marrakech Palmeraie (A301) 198 Marrakech, via the A301 link
Marrakech Tamansourt (N7) 214 The N7 toward Safi and El Jadida
Marrakech Targa 232 Marrakech (exit P2006)

One more thing: sources do not agree on the road number. Wikipedia, the road wiki and a transfer company all call it the A3, while two other guides write A7. Follow the signs for Marrakech and your GPS rather than the number.

How much are the tolls from Casablanca to Marrakech?

ADM’s published tariff grid lists a standard car (class 1) at 83 to 89 MAD from the Nouaceur toll station to Marrakech, depending on which Marrakech toll station you exit at. The page shows no effective date, so confirm the fare before you budget, especially if you join the motorway somewhere else.

Marrakech toll station Class 1 fare from Nouaceur
Marrakech Palmeraie 83 MAD
Marrakech Tamensourte 84 MAD
Marrakech Targa 89 MAD

One news-style article reports 92 MAD after an April 2026 increase, but ADM’s own grid does not show that figure, so this guide uses ADM’s numbers. If you want certainty, call ADM’s 5050 call center, which its Jawaz page lists.

How do you pay at the toll plazas?

Cash in dirhams is accepted at ADM toll plazas, and change is given. Keep a few small notes in the door pocket so you do not hold up the queue.

Cards are less certain. One guide says bank cards are available at larger plazas on the main A1, A2 and A3 corridors, while another says card payment is not reliable. Carry cash and treat a card as a backup.

On closed sections you take a ticket when you enter. Keep it safe, because losing it usually means paying the maximum fare for that stretch.

What is the Jawaz pass, and do rental cars have one?

Jawaz is an electronic tag that lets you use dedicated lanes at toll plazas without stopping. ADM says tags are sold at toll plazas, ADM agencies and partner outlets, and can be recharged online or at banks. ADM’s page does not say whether tourists or rental cars can use one.

Most rental cars do not include a tag, according to one guide. If you want one, ask the rental company at handover how it works and how any balance is settled. Do not drive into a lane marked for Jawaz only without a tag.

Where should you stop on the Casablanca to Marrakech drive?

Stop at the service areas on the motorway rather than leaving it. A road reference wiki lists five between Casablanca and Marrakech, and two of them, Settat and Ben Guerir, are the ones a transfer company names as natural breaks.

Service area Approx. km from Casablanca
Berrechid 35
Settat 75
Oum Rbia 107
Ben Guerir 154
Sidi Bou Othmane 194

These distances are approximate, and the wiki notes that Sidi Bou Othmane is a rest area in one direction and a service area in the other. One guide says petrol stations are spaced every 50 to 80 km on the main motorways, so the safe habit is to refuel when you are at half a tank. For pump prices and what to budget on a longer trip, read our fuel prices in Morocco road trip guide.

If you are continuing into the mountains, the next decision is the road over the Atlas. Our guide to the Tizi n’Tichka pass covers it, and the Dades Valley guide covers a destination further on.

Is the Casablanca to Marrakech drive safe?

For most visitors it is an ordinary, manageable drive, but the usual Moroccan road risks apply. The UK Foreign Office says road accidents are a frequent occurrence in Morocco and that poor lighting can make night driving dangerous. The Government of Canada advises avoiding driving at night and adds that fatal accidents are common and that not all drivers follow traffic rules. The US State Department rates Morocco at Level 2, exercise increased caution, mainly because of terrorism.

In practice that means a few habits:

  • Leave in daylight, and avoid Friday afternoon if you can, since one transfer company puts that window at up to 3h30.
  • Keep to the 120 km/h motorway limit or lower. Wikipedia gives 120 km/h as the general motorway limit, and signs on the day take priority.
  • Carry your passport, license and rental papers. Canada notes that checkpoints are frequent and that you should keep an accident report form (constat amiable) in the car.

For the bigger picture, read is it safe to drive in Morocco.

Can you pick up a car at Casablanca airport and drive straight to Marrakech?

Yes, the motorway starts close to Mohammed V airport, so you can leave the terminal, pay the first toll just after the airport exit and be on your way. Marralux hands over cars at Casablanca Mohammed V and at Marrakech Menara, along with Rabat-Salé, Fès-Saïss, Tangier Ibn Battouta and Agadir-Al Massira. Its homepage lists 24/7 roadside assistance and insurance questions answered through WhatsApp.

A long-haul flight followed by a three-hour drive tires some travelers. Marralux also offers chauffeur service and airport transfers, so you can choose to be driven instead. If you plan to pick up in one city and return in the other, ask on WhatsApp before you book.

In Marrakech, expect the medina to be pedestrian-only, as a transfer company points out. Plan to park or be dropped at an access point and walk in, and check with your hotel or riad about the best approach.

To see the cars available, open the Marralux fleet, or message the team on WhatsApp at +212 764-025773 with your dates and route.
