Marrakech to Chefchaouen Road Trip: Route and Costs
The marrakech to chefchaouen road trip covers roughly 590 km one way, and most drivers split it into two days rather than pushing straight through. If you’ve got a rental car already booked, this is one of the most rewarding long drives in Morocco: you leave the ochre walls of Marrakech and end up in a mountain town painted almost entirely blue.
It’s not a trip to rush. The road passes through Casablanca and Rabat before climbing north into the Rif mountains, and the last stretch into Chefchaouen is narrow and twisty enough that you’ll want daylight for it.

How long is the Marrakech to Chefchaouen road trip?
Figure 7 to 8 hours of pure driving time if you go straight, longer if you stop in Rabat or Fes along the way. Most people don’t do it in one go. A common pattern is Marrakech to Rabat (around 3.5 hours), an overnight stop, then Rabat to Chefchaouen (about 4 hours) the next day. That breaks a long slog into two manageable legs and gives you a reason to see Rabat, which a lot of first time visitors skip entirely.
If you’d rather go via Fes, add an extra 2 hours and a genuinely interesting stop. The Fes to Chefchaouen leg runs through the Rif foothills and is prettier than the flat coastal route, though the road narrows considerably in the final 40 km before town.
Marrakech to Chefchaouen road trip: suggested 2-day plan
| Leg | Approx. driving time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1: Marrakech to Rabat | About 3.5 hours | Mostly motorway; afternoon in Rabat |
| Day 2: Rabat to Chefchaouen | About 4 hours | Last stretch from Ouezzane is narrow and twisty, so drive it in daylight |
| Alternative via Fes | Adds about 2 hours | Prettier Rif foothills; good if you want a night in Fes |
What the drive actually costs
Fuel is the main variable. A mid-size sedan covering roughly 1,180 km round trip at an average 6 to 7 litres per 100 km uses around 70 to 85 litres of fuel. Multiply that by the pump price on the day (see our guide to fuel prices in Morocco) to get your budget. Add motorway tolls between Marrakech, Casablanca and Rabat, which you can skip by taking the older national roads at the cost of extra driving time; our guide to toll roads in Morocco explains how payment works.
Parking in Chefchaouen itself is cheap, usually 10-20 MAD for the day at one of the lots just outside the medina walls, since cars can’t get into the old town anyway.
Driving conditions you should actually plan for
The motorway sections are in good shape and well signed. Where it gets harder is the last 35-40 km climbing up from Ouezzane into the Rif, where the road tightens into blind bends with no hard shoulder in places. Trucks move slowly on these sections, and so should you. Don’t attempt this stretch after dark if you can avoid it. Visibility drops fast once the sun goes down and the road has no lighting at all outside the towns.
If you’ve never driven a manual gearbox on a mountain road, this particular stretch is a reasonable place to start, nothing here compares to the hairpins further south near Tizi n Tichka. Still, book an automatic if you’re not confident, most of our fleet is available either way.
What to see once you arrive
Chefchaouen’s blue medina is the obvious draw, and it earns the reputation. Give yourself at least one full day there before heading back south. The town itself is small enough to walk end to end in 20 minutes, so a two night stay is usually enough unless you want to hike up to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint for sunset, which is worth the 30 minute walk.
For background on the town’s history and the Rif region more broadly, Wikipedia’s overview of Chefchaouen is a decent starting point before you go.
Picking up your car for the trip
Most people start this drive from Marrakech, so pickup logistics matter. If you’re renting through our Marrakech location, book at least a few days ahead during spring and autumn when demand is highest. For a shorter version of this kind of trip, our guide to the Marrakech to Fes road trip covers a route that shares the first half of this one if you want to compare.
Whatever car you choose, check the fuel policy and mileage allowance before you sign, since a trip this long will rack up over a thousand kilometres. Browse the full fleet here or see what’s available more broadly across car rental in Morocco if Marrakech isn’t your starting point.
Marrakech to Chefchaouen road trip FAQ
Can I do the drive in one day?
It is possible with an early start, but 7 to 8 hours of driving plus breaks means you would reach the Rif mountain section late in the day. Splitting the Marrakech to Chefchaouen road trip over two days is safer and more enjoyable.
Where do I park in Chefchaouen?
Use one of the guarded lots just outside the medina walls. Cars cannot enter the old town, and your hotel can usually tell you the closest lot.
Can I return the car somewhere other than Marrakech?
Often yes, for a one-way fee. If you plan to fly home from the north, read our guide to one-way car rental from Marrakech or see car rental in Tangier.
Book your car at least five days before you plan to leave, confirm unlimited mileage is included, and pack a physical road map as a backup. Phone signal drops out completely in a few stretches of the Rif mountains, and you don’t want to be stuck without a way to double check your route.
