One Way Car Rental Marrakech: What You Need to Know
So you’ve landed in Marrakech, you’re planning two weeks on the road, and your flight home actually leaves from Casablanca or Essaouira. Returning the car to Marrakech just to catch a taxi to another airport makes no sense, so you start googling one way car rental marrakech options. Here’s what actually happens once you call around and ask the real questions.

Why one way car rental marrakech isn’t as simple as the ads make it look
Most comparison sites show a dropdown where you pick a different return city, like magic. In reality, every agency in Morocco treats a one-way rental as a problem they have to solve internally. Someone has to drive that car back, or pay a transport company to truck it, and that cost gets passed to you as a relocation fee. Expect somewhere between 600 and 2,500 MAD (roughly 55 to 230 EUR) on top of the normal rental price, depending on the distance and whether the destination city even has a branch of its own. If it doesn’t, the quote usually gets a lot higher, or the agency just says no.
This is also why aggregator sites sometimes list a one-way option that evaporates the moment you call to confirm. The search engine doesn’t know the agency’s actual fleet logistics that week. We’d rather tell you no up front than take your deposit and cancel on you three days before pickup.
Routes that actually work from Marrakech
Marrakech to Casablanca is the easiest one. It’s about 240 km on the A7 toll motorway, roughly three hours of driving, and both cities have enough rental activity that repositioning a car isn’t a huge deal. The fee tends to land on the lower end of that range.
Marrakech to Essaouira works well too, around 190 km and under three hours on a decent two-lane road. A lot of travelers end their trip there for the beach town atmosphere before flying out of Marrakech anyway, so this route actually runs in both directions fairly often.
Marrakech to Agadir, about 250 km via Chichaoua, is doable and priced similarly to the Casablanca route. Marrakech to Fes is the one that gets expensive, over 550 km, and some agencies will decline it outright because repositioning that car eats most of a working day for one of their drivers. If you need that specific route, ask early and expect to pay 1,500 MAD or more in relocation fees on top of the rental itself. Matching the route to what agencies actually support is the real heart of one way car rental marrakech planning.
Before you book a one way rental
Get the drop fee in writing. A phone quote means nothing if the person at the counter has a different number three weeks later. Ask whether the fuel policy changes for one-way trips too, since some agencies insist on a full tank at both ends regardless of distance.
Also confirm the destination branch will actually be staffed when you plan to arrive. Showing up at 9pm to a locked gate with nowhere to leave the keys is a real complaint we’ve heard from travelers who booked through other companies. It’s an easy thing to check by email two days before you land, and it saves you a miserable evening.
One more thing that trips people up on any rental, one-way or not: fuel at return. Top off the tank before you hand the keys back. Show up with it half full and most agencies will charge you 150 to 200 MAD more per missing liter than you’d pay at the pump, and they won’t negotiate on it. Keep the receipt from your last fill-up if you’re worried about a dispute.
Morocco’s road network connects all of this more easily than first-time visitors expect, especially the motorway spine running through the main coastal and inland cities. You can read more about how the country’s road and transport system is laid out if you’re curious. That network is a big part of why one-way trips are even realistic in the first place, provided you plan the paperwork early.
