Renting a car in Morocco: cost, minimum age, debit cards, no-deposit offers and driving to Spain

Renting a car in Morocco typically costs from about 16 euros a day for a small car to around 90 euros for an SUV, based on one price aggregator, and the major companies want a credit card in the driver’s name, not a debit card. The minimum age is usually 21 to 25 depending on the car class, and at least one major company bans taking its Moroccan rental cars across the border, so plan to return the car in Morocco.

This guide covers price, age, documents, deposits, no-deposit offers and the Spain question. Figures come from pages we opened on October 24, 2026. Every rental company sets its own rules, so get the terms in writing before you pay.

How much does renting a car in Morocco cost?

Expect roughly 16 to 105 euros per day depending on the car class, with SUVs and luxury cars at the top. The table shows average daily prices listed by the Kayak Morocco car hire page when we read it.

The same page names July as the most expensive month overall at 37 euros a day and November as the cheapest at 20. Some figures on that page do not agree with each other, and the averages come from past searches, not a live quote. Anyone renting a car in Morocco should treat them as a guide only, so use them to judge whether an offer looks too cheap or too high, then compare real quotes for your dates.

The daily rate is only part of the bill. Three things change the total most:

  • Mileage limits. Les MRE lists a limited-mileage package as a common pitfall, with large surcharges per extra kilometer. A route like the one over the Tizi n’Tichka pass adds up fast.
  • Insurance excess. The amount you pay if the car is damaged varies a lot. Sixt Morocco, for example, lists customer liability from 14,000 to 45,000 MAD by car category on its Morocco rental information page.
  • Fees. Sixt also lists a 132 euro service fee for late returns without notice and a 211.20 MAD fee for changing the return location on a prepaid booking. Other companies have their own schedules.

Fuel is a separate budget line. Our Morocco fuel price guide helps you estimate it for a road trip. For a broader price breakdown, read our car rental Morocco cost guide.

What is the minimum age to rent a car in Morocco?

The minimum age is usually between 21 and 25, set by the car category, and drivers under 25 may pay a surcharge. On its Morocco page, Sixt groups its cars into three age bands and asks for a full license held for at least two years in every category.

Eight categories24

Sixt applies a young driver surcharge to renters under 23 and does not publish the amount on that page. Budget’s Marrakech listing says minimum age may vary by location and that renters under 25 may pay an additional daily surcharge. Les MRE states that age and license seniority are set by each company. Smaller local companies can differ from both, so ask before you book. Our minimum age guide goes deeper on this.

What documents do you need for renting a car in Morocco?

When renting a car in Morocco, bring your original, valid license, your passport and a credit card in your own name. Sixt does not accept photocopies, digital licenses, learner’s permits or licenses with driving restrictions.

A license printed in a non-Roman alphabet needs an International Driving Permit, according to Sixt. A license from a country outside the Geneva and Vienna conventions needs an official English or French translation. Most US, UK, Canadian and EU licenses use the Roman alphabet, but desk rules vary, so an IDP is cheap insurance against an argument at the counter. We cover this in more detail in our guide to driving with a US, UK, Canadian or EU license.

Once you are on the road, the Government of Canada advises carrying identification and vehicle documents at all times because checkpoints are frequent. The full checklist is in our guide to documents required to rent a car in Morocco.

Can you rent a car in Morocco with a debit card?

Often not. Sixt Morocco accepts credit cards from recognized networks, requires the renter to own the card, and does not accept prepaid or debit cards, including Visa Electron. Other companies may allow a debit card or a card in another name, but you should not assume it.

The card also has to cover the security deposit, which sits on top of the rental price. Les MRE says the card limit must cover both, and that some agencies take a hold (an imprint) without charging it right away.

Sixt lists deposits, which it calls an advance charge approval, from 14,000 to 45,000 MAD depending on the car category. For longer rentals the rules change: over 28 days, Sixt debits the full deposit at the start and refunds 96 percent at return if there is no damage or missing fuel.

Are there no-deposit car rental offers in Morocco?

Some exist, but read what they replace. A no-deposit or zero-excess offer usually means paying for extra cover so the damage excess falls to zero. Sixt Morocco shows how that works: its standard waiver leaves the customer liable for 14,000 to 45,000 MAD, a reduced-excess option for 7,000 to 27,000 MAD, and a minimum-excess option at 0.

Before you accept, ask three things in writing: what the extra cover costs per day, whether any card hold is still taken, and what the cover excludes. Sixt sells tire and windscreen protection as a separate product, which suggests these items may sit outside a basic waiver, so check the contract. See also our guide to car rental insurance in Morocco.

Can you drive a rental car from Morocco to Spain?

Usually not, and you should assume no unless the contract says yes in writing. Sixt’s Morocco terms state that cross border rentals are not allowed, and that breaking territorial restrictions voids all protections. The page does not name Spain, but the rule covers any border crossing, including the ferry from Tangier.

Taking a car across without permission can leave you without insurance if something goes wrong. The cost of a damaged or lost car would then fall on you. Other companies have their own policies, so ask before booking and keep the written answer.

There are simpler routes:

  • Return the car at Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport or another Moroccan city, then continue to Spain by ferry or flight as a foot passenger.
  • Rent a second car in Spain for the European leg.
  • Book a chauffeur or an airport transfer for the day you cross.

What should you check before you pick up the car?

Before renting a car in Morocco is final, photograph every panel and the interior before you leave the lot, and read the contract for mileage, excess and fuel. Les MRE lists four traps: a limited-mileage package, no photos of existing damage, a card the company will not accept for the deposit, and driving without a damage waiver.

Also keep the accident report form in the glovebox. The Government of Canada says to carry a “constat à l’amiable”, sold at newsstands, and notes that police usually do not attend property-damage-only accidents. The parties fill in a joint report instead. Our guide to driving safely in Morocco covers road conditions in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average cost to rent a car in Morocco?

One aggregator lists about 16 euros a day for a small car, 41 for a medium car and 88 for an SUV. Prices rise in July and fall in winter, and your own quote will differ.

What is the cheapest month to rent a car in Morocco?

The Kayak page names November as the cheapest month overall and July as the most expensive. Treat that as a trend, since the page contains figures that do not match each other.

Can I rent a car in Morocco at 21?

Sometimes. Sixt Morocco allows 21 for four of its categories, with 24 or 25 for the rest, and adds a surcharge under 23. Other companies set their own limits.

Do I need an International Driving Permit?

Sixt requires one only for licenses in non-Roman alphabets, and a translation for licenses from outside the Geneva and Vienna conventions. Some desks ask for one anyway, so carrying an IDP avoids a dispute.

Can I use a debit card to rent a car in Morocco?

Sixt does not accept debit or prepaid cards. Ask any other company before you travel, and bring a credit card in the main driver’s name as a backup.

How big is the security deposit?

At Sixt Morocco it ranges from 14,000 to 45,000 MAD by car category. Other companies set different amounts, and some take a hold without charging it.

Can I take a rental car on the ferry to Spain?

Sixt’s Morocco terms do not allow cross border rentals. Assume the same unless your contract clearly permits it.

Is a deposit-free rental really free of risk?

No. It usually moves the risk to a paid waiver with its own exclusions, so read what the waiver does not cover.
