Driving in Casablanca: traffic, airport pickup and parking
Driving in Casablanca is easy on the way out of the airport and hard once you reach the city center. Mohammed V airport connects straight to the motorway network, so you can head for Rabat, Marrakech or El Jadida without entering downtown, but central Casablanca has heavy traffic and scarce, informal parking, and many visitors are better off leaving the car parked there.
This guide to driving in Casablanca covers the airport route, tolls, rush-hour traffic, parking and the cases where a taxi or the tram is the better call. Figures come from government travel advice and local sources we opened on October 22, 2026. Each one is linked in the Sources section, and where two sources disagree we say so.
Driving in Casablanca: is it hard?
In the center, yes. On the motorways and the airport approach, it is a normal drive with a few cautions. Casablanca ranked 8th in Africa on Numbeo’s 2025 Traffic Index, according to Le Matin, which also reports that a resident spends an average of 44 minutes per trip. That is a ranking of congestion, not a safety score.
Official advice is consistent. The Government of Canada says not all drivers follow traffic rules, that pedestrians, scooters and animals can be hazards, and that you should avoid driving at night. It singles out the Rabat-Casablanca highway: be extremely careful there because of high traffic volume. The UK FCDO adds that road accidents are a frequent occurrence in Morocco and that on motorways you should watch for overloaded trucks overtaking where there is no hard shoulder.
Nationally, Bladi reported 4,577 road deaths in 2025, citing road safety data in an article dated March 28, 2026. We could not match that figure to a primary NARSA publication, so treat it as a press-reported number. For a wider view of conditions, read our guide on whether it is safe to drive in Morocco.
How do you get from Casablanca airport to the city by car?
Expect roughly 35 km and 35 to 45 minutes outside peak hours, and up to 70 minutes in morning or evening rush hour. Those figures come from MoroccoForYou, a commercial travel guide published June 3, 2026. The same guide lists no toll for the trip to the city center, but we could not confirm that on an official page, so check your route before you rely on it.
Sources disagree on which motorway to take. Wikipedia says the main access from Casablanca is the A3, while MoroccoForYou names the A7. Follow your GPS and the airport signs rather than a road number.
For longer trips, the ToolGuru toll guide (updated September 28, 2026) says cash is accepted at all plazas, bank cards only at larger plazas on the main corridors, and that a Jawaz tag gives faster lanes but no discount. Keep cash in dirhams in the car. Its two Casablanca to Rabat prices for a car (25 MAD in a table and 23 MAD in the text) do not agree with each other, and MoroccoForYou gives 33 MAD, so treat toll amounts as approximate.
| Option | Time | Approximate cost | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rental car | 35 to 45 min, up to 70 in rush hour | Fuel plus any toll | Most flexible if you continue to another city |
| Train to Casa-Voyageurs | About 30 min (ONDA) | 43 MAD second class (MoroccoForYou) | ONDA says airport departures generally run 06:50 to 22:50; Wikipedia gives 04:00 to 23:00 |
| Petit taxi | Similar to driving | 250 to 350 MAD by day (MoroccoForYou) | Night fares are higher; agree the price or use the meter |
| Grand taxi (shared) | 45 to 60 min | 60 to 80 MAD per seat (MoroccoForYou) | Shared with other passengers |
Taxi and train prices come from a single commercial source and may have changed. The UK FCDO also warns that taxis booked through ride-sharing apps may be unregulated and that you should agree a fare in advance or check that the meter is running.
How does car pickup at Casablanca airport work?
Marralux lists Casablanca Mohammed V among its six airport pickup points, and its homepage describes airport pickup and drop-off as always open. If you would rather not drive on arrival, it also offers a chauffeur service and airport transfers that track flight schedules in real time, with meet-and-greet available around the clock. See the fleet page for the cars on offer.
Whoever you rent from, a few steps make the first hour easier:
- Carry your license, passport and rental papers. The Government of Canada advises carrying identification and vehicle documents at all times because checkpoints are frequent.
- Check that your license is accepted. The UK FCDO says Morocco no longer accepts the 1949 international driving permit and asks for the 1968 version, and that hire companies may set a minimum age and years of experience.
- Ask for the accident report form (constat amiable) and keep it in the car. Both the Canadian and UK advice say it is used after an accident, and the Canadian advice says police usually do not attend for property damage only.
- Walk around the car and photograph existing damage before you leave the lot.
- Download an offline map and set your first destination while still parked, so you are not fiddling with a phone on the motorway ramp.
If you land late, remember the official warning against night driving. Poor lighting makes it harder to see vehicles, pedestrians and animals, according to the UK FCDO. A chauffeur transfer for the first night, then a self-drive pickup the next morning, is a sensible way to avoid it. Fuel costs are covered in our Morocco fuel prices guide.
When is traffic worst in Casablanca?
The sources we opened describe a morning and an evening rush hour but do not give exact clock times, so we will not invent a schedule. The one measured figure is the airport run, which stretches from 35 to 45 minutes to as much as 70 minutes at peak (MoroccoForYou). Plan to arrive and leave outside the commuting peaks, and check a live traffic map before you set off.
Two other causes of delay are worth knowing. The UK FCDO warns that protests can happen without warning in large cities. The Government of Canada says demonstrations mostly occur near government buildings in Rabat, Casablanca and other major cities, and that they can disrupt traffic and public transportation. If you see a crowd, turn around and avoid it. The Rabat-Casablanca highway, flagged by Canada for its high traffic volume, is the other place where a short trip can turn into a long one. Keep this in mind whenever you are driving in Casablanca during a demonstration or a major event.
Where can you park in Casablanca?
Parking is the most irritating part of driving in Casablanca’s downtown. Public street parking is a mix of meters and attendants, and the published tariffs we found are several years old, so use them as a rough guide only.
| Type | What reports say | Date of source |
|---|---|---|
| Metered spaces run by Casa Développement (Roches Noires, Sidi Belyout, Anfa, Maârif) | 2 MAD per hour | TelQuel, July 2019; Bladi, July 2020 |
| Spaces managed by the districts | Flat 3 MAD for a car, said to double in the evening | TelQuel, July 2019 |
| Attendants in tourist or busy areas | Reported charging up to 10 MAD, described as overcharging | TelQuel, July 2019 |
| Meter rollout | About 15,000 spaces had 800 meters, with a plan for 45,000 | Bladi, February 2025 |
The February 2025 article also says the mayor barred new authorizations for parking attendants while the city reorganizes the system, and that meters and attendants may coexist. In practice, expect to pay someone small change when you leave a street space, and ask them what they want before you hand it over.
A hotel with its own parking or a staffed garage removes most of the hassle. Ask your hotel before you book. The UK FCDO notes that thefts and burglaries occur in major cities, so take valuables with you and do not leave bags visible in the car.
Should you drive in Casablanca or use taxis and the tram?
Drive if the car is your way out of the city, and skip it if you are staying in Casablanca for a day or two. The city has a four-line tram network with a flat fare of 8 MAD per ride, according to Wikipedia, which also lists a source title that says 6 MAD, so confirm at the ticket machine. Line T3 runs from the Casa Port station, and T2 reaches the Ain Diab seafront.
| Your plan | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Landing and driving straight to Rabat, Marrakech or El Jadida | Rental car | You join the motorway network from the airport and skip downtown |
| Two days in Casablanca, hotel in the center | Taxi or tram, car optional | Parking is scarce and traffic is heavy |
| Landing after dark | Chauffeur transfer or taxi | Official advice is to avoid night driving |
| First time driving in Morocco | Pick up the car after your first city day | You get used to local driving before motorways |
| Group or lots of luggage | Rental car or chauffeur | Taxis fit fewer bags and people |
Marralux offers both a chauffeur service and airport pickup. If you want a chauffeur for the city days and a self-drive car for the rest of the trip, ask the team on WhatsApp at +212 764-025773 whether it can be arranged for your dates.
What are the main drives out of Casablanca?
Most visitors use Casablanca as a gateway and drive on within a day or two rather than spending their whole trip driving in Casablanca itself. The three common first legs are covered below at a high level, with the details a driver needs.
Rabat (north). This is the busy Rabat-Casablanca highway the Government of Canada asks drivers to take extra care on. Toll amounts for a car vary by source, from 23 MAD to 33 MAD, so keep cash ready.
Marrakech (south). The motorway toll is listed at 78 MAD by MoroccoForYou, which we could not confirm on an official page. If you continue from Marrakech over the High Atlas toward Ouarzazate, read our guide to the Tizi n’Tichka pass first, and the Dades Valley guide if that is your destination.
Fes (northeast). MoroccoForYou lists a 70 MAD toll from Casablanca. As on every route, the UK FCDO advises extra care on mountain and secondary roads in poor weather.

Frequently asked questions
Is driving in Casablanca safe?
Most visitors manage it, but it needs attention. Official advice warns of heavy traffic on the Rabat-Casablanca highway, drivers who do not always follow the rules, and hazards at night. See our wider guide on driving safety in Morocco.
Do I need to drive in the center of Casablanca?
No. From Mohammed V airport you can join the motorways toward other cities without entering downtown. If you are staying in the center, taxis and the tram avoid the parking problem.
How far is Casablanca airport from the city?
About 35 km and 35 to 45 minutes by car outside peak hours, per MoroccoForYou. Driving in Casablanca traffic can take up to 70 minutes in rush hour.
Is there a toll from the airport to the city center?
One guide lists no toll for that trip, but we could not confirm it on an official page. Longer motorway trips do have tolls, and cash works at every plaza.
Can I pick up a rental car at Casablanca airport at night?
Marralux describes its airport pickup and drop-off as always open and offers 24/7 meet-and-greet for transfers. Official advice still recommends against driving in Casablanca at night, so a daytime pickup is easier on a first visit.
What documents do I need to drive there?
Carry your passport, license and rental papers. The UK FCDO says Morocco no longer accepts the 1949 international driving permit and asks for the 1968 version, plus a green card from your insurer for your own car. Your rental company can tell you what applies to your license.
Is parking free in Casablanca?
No. Metered spaces and street attendants charge, and published tariffs are a few years old. If you plan on driving in Casablanca regularly, expect small fees and ask your hotel about secure parking.
Is a taxi from the airport better than driving?
If you are staying in the center and not continuing by road, usually yes, since driving in Casablanca traffic rarely beats a taxi for a short hop. If you are heading to another city, the car saves a transfer. Taxi prices vary, and the UK FCDO advises agreeing the fare in advance or checking the meter.
