Marrakech to Imlil Road Trip: Route and Costs
A Marrakech to Imlil road trip covers about 65 km and takes roughly an hour and a half if you don’t stop, longer if you do, which you should, because the drive through the Ourika foothills and Asni is half the reason to rent a car in the first place. Imlil sits at around 1,740 meters in the High Atlas, the last proper village before the trailheads up to Toubkal, and it’s one of the easiest mountain escapes from Marrakech if you’re driving yourself instead of waiting on a shared taxi.

Why drive yourself instead of taking a taxi
Grand taxis run between Marrakech and Asni fairly often, and from Asni you can usually find a shared ride up to Imlil, but the schedule depends on how many seats fill up, and you’ll wait around more than once. A rental car removes that problem entirely. You leave when you want, you stop at the weekly souk in Asni on Saturdays if the timing lines up, and you’re not sharing a seven seat Dacia with six strangers and their bags.
It also matters for the return trip. Shared taxis back to Marrakech tend to thin out by late afternoon, and if you’ve just finished a half day walk near the Kasbah du Toubkal, the last thing you want is to stand at a junction hoping a taxi has room.
The route from Marrakech to Imlil
You’ll take the road south out of Marrakech, past the town of Tahanaout, and the road climbs gradually once you clear the plain. It’s a paved two lane road the whole way, in decent condition, though it narrows and gets twistier for the last 15 km or so after Asni. Expect switchbacks, the occasional mule train, and slower trucks hauling produce, especially if you take the slightly longer loop through Ouirgane. Fuel up in Marrakech before you leave. There’s a station in Asni, but it’s not always open, and there’s nothing past it.
Imlil itself is car free at the center. You’ll park at the entrance to the village, where a handful of guardians, informally and for a small fee, usually 20 to 30 MAD for the day, will watch your car while you walk in. From there, mules do the heavy lifting if you’re staying at a gite further up the valley.
What the drive actually costs
Fuel for the round trip from Marrakech is modest, figure on roughly 10 to 15 liters depending on your vehicle and whether you detour through Ouirgane. At current pump prices that’s well under 200 MAD in fuel alone. Compare that to a private taxi charter for the day, which local drivers typically quote at 400 to 600 MAD depending on how long you keep them waiting, and the math favors a rental car if you’re planning on more than a single drop off and pickup. A compact SUV handles the climb better than a city hatchback, and it’s worth the small price difference if you’re going in winter when the upper road can see ice before sunrise.
Driving tips for the mountain road
Keep your speed down through Asni itself. The market town gets crowded with pedestrians, carts, and parked cars narrowing the road to one real lane in places. Past Asni, use your horn lightly on the blind switchbacks, the way local drivers do, rather than relying on your mirrors alone. If you meet a flock of goats or a mule train coming the other way, just stop and let them pass. Trying to squeeze by rarely goes well and there’s no need to rush it.
What to do once you’re in Imlil
Most visitors come for Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak, but you don’t need to attempt the summit to make the drive worthwhile. A short walk up to the Imlil waterfall takes about two hours round trip and gives you a real sense of the valley without technical gear. The Kasbah du Toubkal, a former local chief’s residence turned mountain lodge, serves lunch to non guests with a reservation, and the terrace view back down the valley is worth the stop on its own.
If you’d rather not drive the switchbacks yourself, Marralux can arrange a driver for the day, but most of our clients who’ve done the Ourika valley drive before find the Imlil road manageable in a compact SUV with decent ground clearance.
Check our guide to car rental insurance in Morocco before you head into the mountains, and confirm you meet the minimum age to rent a car in Morocco if you’re a younger driver. Book a 4×4 or compact SUV through Marralux in Marrakech with delivery to your riad, and plan to leave by 8am. You’ll beat the Asni market traffic and have the whole afternoon free in the valley before the drive back down.
