Can I take a rental car on the ferry to Spain or drive to the Sahara?
Almost certainly not to Spain, and only with limits in the Sahara. The Morocco rental terms we read (Sixt and Budget) forbid taking the car out of the country, and Sixt says breaking its territorial restrictions voids all protections. Inside Morocco, the government advice we read warns against travel to parts of Western Sahara and to the Algerian border.
Can I take a rental car from Morocco to Spain on the ferry?
No, unless your contract says yes in writing. Two published sets of Morocco rental conditions prohibit it.
| Company | What the Morocco terms say | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sixt | “Cross Border Rentals are not allowed.” Breaking cross-border and territorial restrictions makes all protections lose their validity. | Sixt Morocco |
| Budget | Driving the vehicle outside the country is not permitted (the page is in Spanish). One-way rentals are allowed only within Morocco. | Budget Morocco conditions |
| Avis (Fez) | The location page does not mention cross-border travel. | Avis Fez |
Sixt’s page does not name Spain or the ferry, but a ban on cross-border rentals covers any border, including the sea crossing from Tangier. The ferry operator DFDS lists Morocco and Spain routes, but its vehicle page gives no rules for Moroccan rentals, so a ferry booking does not make a rental car eligible.
What happens if I take it anyway?
You lose your cover. On Sixt’s terms, all protections lose their validity when you break the cross-border and territorial restrictions. The same page lists third-party liability among its protections, so a breach could leave you exposed for damage and for injuries you cause. Confirm what applies in your own contract, and do not test it.
How can I get from Morocco to Spain with a rental car?
You change vehicles at the border, not cross with one. There are three practical routes:
- Return the car in Tangier and continue by ferry as a foot passenger. Marralux hands over cars at Tangier Ibn Battouta, and Budget’s conditions allow one-way rentals within Morocco, so a Casablanca to Tangier drop-off is a normal plan. Ask about any one-way fee.
- Return the car at an airport and fly on.
- Rent a second car in Spain for the European leg.
Book the Spanish car through a Spanish rental company, and read its terms for crossing back into Morocco, because the same question applies in reverse.
Can I drive a rental car in the Sahara?
It depends on where. The desert areas in the south are a normal tourist destination, but the Government of Canada tells visitors to restrict travel to officially designated tourist areas, seek local official advice before going, hire only official guides and use a four-wheel-drive vehicle off-road. It also warns of a kidnapping threat against Westerners in remote regions.
Western Sahara is a separate case. Both governments single it out.
| Place | What the advice says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Western Sahara, general | Canada: avoid non-essential travel because of terrorism and unexploded landmines. FCDO: advises against all travel to parts of Western Sahara. | Canada, FCDO |
| The Berm and the zones around it | FCDO: 30 km militarized zones either side contain landmines, with many fatalities. It advises against travel within 40 km north and west of the Berm, including Es Semara. Canada: avoid all travel within 30 km west of the militarized zone. | FCDO, Canada |
| South and east of the Berm | FCDO: advises against all travel. Sparsely populated, with no diplomatic presence from any country. | FCDO |
| Algerian border | The land and sea border is closed. FCDO: do not attempt to cross. Canada: avoid all travel within 20 km of it. | FCDO Morocco, Canada |
The two governments describe the zones around the Berm slightly differently (40 km versus 30 km), so stay well clear of both. Neither page we read gives advice for the Mauritania border, and your rental contract is the real limit there: if cross-border driving is banned, the crossing is off the table.
For a southern route with its own detail, see the Dades Valley guide.
Do rental terms limit where I can drive inside Morocco?
Sometimes, and the wording is vague. Sixt refers to “territorial restrictions” and says breaking them voids all protections, but the page does not define them. The Budget conditions we read set a border rule and nothing else. Neither page mentions unpaved roads, desert tracks or Western Sahara.
That gap is your risk. Do not assume a route is allowed because the contract is silent. Ask for the answer in writing, naming the town or road you plan to take.
What should I ask the rental company before I book?
Put these questions in writing and keep the answers:
- Is any cross-border driving allowed, including the Tangier ferry? Ask for the clause.
- What are the “territorial restrictions”? Name any town, region or road you plan to use, including Western Sahara.
- Are unpaved roads and desert tracks allowed, and is a four-wheel-drive vehicle required?
- Can I return the car in a different city, and what is the one-way fee?
- Does roadside assistance cover remote areas?
- If I breach a restriction, which protections are void?
Marralux lists a chauffeur service and airport transfers on its homepage. For a route a contract does not allow, a driver is another way to cover the distance, though it needs to be arranged with the team first.
FAQ: rental cars, Spain and the Sahara
Can I drive a rental car from Morocco to Spain?
Not on the terms we read. Sixt says cross-border rentals are not allowed, and Budget’s conditions prohibit driving the vehicle outside the country.
Can I take a rental car on the Tangier ferry?
Only if your contract allows cross-border travel in writing, which the terms we read do not. DFDS sells Morocco and Spain routes, but its vehicle page does not cover Moroccan rentals.
Can I drop a Moroccan rental car in Tangier and take the ferry on foot?
Budget’s conditions allow one-way rentals within Morocco, so a drop-off in Tangier is possible there. Ask your own company, and ask about the fee.
Can I drive a rental car into Western Sahara?
Check your contract and the government advice first. Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel to Western Sahara, and the UK FCDO advises against all travel to parts of it, including areas near the Berm with landmines.
Can I drive from Morocco to Mauritania or Algeria?
Not to Algeria: the border is closed and both governments say not to try to cross. For Mauritania, the pages we read give no advice, and a cross-border ban in your rental contract would apply.
Do I need a 4×4 for the Sahara?
The Government of Canada recommends a four-wheel-drive vehicle for off-road driving in mountains or desert. Paved routes to popular desert areas are a different question, so ask your rental company about the road.
Is it safe to drive in the desert in the south?
The Canadian guide advises restricting travel to officially designated tourist areas, using official guides and seeking local advice, and it warns of kidnapping risk in remote regions. See our guide on whether it is safe to drive in Morocco.
