Marrakech to Oukaimeden Road Trip: Route and Costs

A Marrakech to Oukaimeden road trip covers about 74 km and takes around an hour and a half each way, and it’s the only mountain drive from the city that ends at a ski resort. Oukaimeden sits at roughly 2,600 meters in the High Atlas, and between December and March, if the snow has come in, it’s often described as home to one of the highest ski lifts on the African continent. Outside the winter months it’s a different trip entirely, with cool air, mountain biking trails, and rock carvings scratched into the stone thousands of years ago.

The route from Marrakech to Oukaimeden

Leave Marrakech on the road toward Asni, then branch off before you reach it, following signs for Oukaimeden through Tnine Ourika and up into the valley. The road is paved the whole way and in reasonable shape, though it narrows past the halfway point and climbs through a series of switchbacks for the last 20 km. In winter this is the stretch that matters most. Ice can form on the shaded bends overnight even when the lower valley looks completely clear, so check conditions before you commit to the drive if there’s been recent snowfall.

Why a rental car beats the organized day tours

Agencies in Marrakech sell Oukaimeden as a half day or full day excursion, usually bundled with a stop in the Ourika valley on the way. That’s fine if you want someone else handling the logistics, but it also means you’re on their schedule, often arriving mid morning when the slopes are already busy and leaving before the light gets good for the drive back down. Driving yourself means you can leave at dawn in ski season, get first access to the lift, and decide on the spot whether to stay longer or head back early if the weather turns.

Driving conditions in winter versus summer

Snow chains are occasionally required on the final approach after a storm, and local authorities will sometimes close the upper road entirely until it’s cleared, so build a backup plan into any winter trip rather than assuming the resort is reachable on a fixed schedule. A compact SUV with reasonable ground clearance handles the climb better than a city hatchback, and good tires matter more here than almost anywhere else in the region. In summer, none of this applies. The road is simply a pleasant, winding mountain drive, and the biggest hazard is sharing it with mountain bikers training on the switchbacks.

What to do once you’re in Oukaimeden

Skiing and snowboarding are the obvious draws from December through March, with rental gear available at the resort itself, though the quality varies and serious skiers often bring their own. The rest of the year, the Oukaimeden plateau is good for short hikes and birdwatching, and a short walk from the main parking area leads to ancient rock engravings depicting animals and weapons, carved by people who lived in the valley long before any road existed. Ask locally for exact directions, since the engravings aren’t signposted the way they probably should be.

Costs and timing for the Marrakech to Oukaimeden drive

Fuel for the round trip is minor, usually well under 150 MAD depending on your vehicle. Lift tickets and gear rental at the resort add to the day but stay modest compared to European ski resorts. The whole outing works comfortably as a single day from Marrakech if you leave by 8am, though an overnight stay at one of the small lodges near the base makes sense if you want first lift access without the early drive.

The High Atlas range that Oukaimeden sits in stretches across much of central Morocco, and Wikipedia’s overview of the High Atlas gives a sense of just how much terrain separates this resort from the desert routes further south.
