Marrakech to Ouzoud Waterfalls: The Complete Road Trip Guide
A Marrakech to Ouzoud waterfalls day trip is one of the few drives near the city where the destination genuinely looks like the photos. The falls drop about 110 meters over a series of cascades into the El Abid gorge, and on a clear morning you’ll often spot Barbary macaques moving through the olive trees along the path down. It’s roughly 150 km from Marrakech, around two and a half hours each way on decent roads, which makes it an easy single day out if you leave early.

The Marrakech to Ouzoud waterfalls drive itself
Most routes go via the N8 and then smaller regional roads through Azilal province. The roads are paved the whole way but narrower and more winding once you’re past Afourer, with some sections cutting through terraced farmland that’s worth slowing down for even without the waterfalls at the end. It’s not a difficult drive for anyone used to mountain roads, nothing like the switchbacks on Tizi n Tichka, but you will want a car with reasonable ground clearance if it’s rained recently, since a couple of side roads near the falls turn muddy fast.
Leaving Marrakech by 7:30 or 8 am gets you to the falls before the midday tour buses, and before the heat makes the climb back up from the pools uncomfortable in summer. Fuel up in Marrakech, there are stations in Afourer too but prices are sometimes a touch higher outside the city.
What to actually do once you’re there
The main viewpoint near the parking area gives you the classic wide shot, but the better experience is walking down the stepped path to the base, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes depending on how often you stop. Boat operators at the bottom pool offer short rides close to the falls for a small fee, usually 10 to 20 MAD, worth it once for the spray and the angle you can’t get from land. There’s also an old olive press near the top of the falls that’s been there for generations and still operates seasonally, a genuinely local detail most guidebooks skip over.
Bring cash in small bills. Parking attendants, boat operators, and the handful of small restaurants built into the rock face all run on cash, and there’s no reliable card payment out here. A tagine lunch at one of the terrace restaurants overlooking the falls runs 60 to 120 MAD per person, and the view is honestly worth paying for even if the food is fairly standard.
Car rental versus a guided tour to Ouzoud
Shared group tours from Marrakech are common and cheap, often 200 to 300 MAD per person including the guide, but they run on a fixed schedule and usually allocate only two to three hours at the falls before heading back. Driving yourself costs more once you add fuel, roughly 200 to 250 MAD round trip in a compact car, but you control how long you stay, which matters if you want to catch the macaques in better light or avoid the worst of the tour-group crowds around midday.
For this route, a compact or mid-size automatic from our Marrakech car rental page handles the roads fine. You don’t need a 4×4 unless you’re planning to continue further into the Azilal mountains afterward, in which case our guide to 4×4 rental in Morocco covers what’s available. If you’d rather turn this into a longer loop with other stops, our roundup of day trips from Marrakech lists a few combinations that work well together.
The Ouzoud falls area sits within the broader Azilal region, and the background on the falls’ geology explains why the water carries that distinctive mineral color you’ll notice in photos, caused by the limestone it passes through on the way down.
